Blog Tour Stop: Love Notes by Heather Gunter

Title: Love Notes
Author: Heather Gunter
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance
Release Date: May 2, 2013

Synopsis
How do you cope when the people you care for hurt you the most? When the way you feel on the outside, smothers you on the inside. And when you are left to face your demons alone, will you learn that only you have the power to overcome them? Charlie has never had it easy. Between the constant moving and the incessant fat comments and jokes from her father, her self-worth is nonexistent. Her reflection in the mirror shows her nothing but a plain Jane. Music is the only thing that keeps her sanity in check. Charlie catches the eye of the town star quarterback, Maverick. With her curves, her brunette hair, and the voice of an angel, Maverick has never met anyone like her. Everything that is different about Charlie just makes Maverick like her more. Unfortunately, Charlie doesn’t see it herself. Proving it to her may deem harder than he thinks, especially when tragedy strikes and tears them apart. Now standing on her own two feet she may finally learn exactly who she is, what’s she’s capable of and how very un plain Jane she really is.

Excerpt
I’m pressed firmly against him and place my hand on the hardness of his muscled chest. The nearness of him is intoxicating. My heart speeds up with the knowledge of what is inevitably going to happen next. Right now, I don't care how long I've known him or what the usual rules of dating dictate.

We are staring at each other eye to eye. “I’m going to kiss you now Charlie,” Maverick whispers.

At that moment, all I can do is nod. No words were going to be coming out of this mouth; it was going to be used for other things.

Maverick moves his arms from around my waist, gently cups my face with his hands and tips my head back some. He places his lips on mine, and it was as if time stood still. His kiss starts out oh so slowly, and as we find our rhythm, it begins to increase in pressure and intensity. My arms, having a mind of their own, begin to wrap around his neck and pull him even closer, although I'm not sure how that is even possible. I honestly didn’t think we could get any closer together than we already were. Maverick kisses me like I am everything, like I was his last dying breath. I have never been kissed like this before.

I finally draw away from him to catch my breath. “That was…”

Maverick looks me in the eyes. “Wow.”

My Thoughts
For Charlie, a senior starting at a new high school, graduation cannot come soon enough. With a father who degrades and ridicules her on a daily basis, and a silent mother who watches from the wings, music is her only escape. Until she meets Maverick.

Maverick is the school football star, the good looking guy that every girl wants to date and every guy wants to be friends with. He runs into Charlie, literally, and is instantly taken with her.

Charlie and Maverick fall into an easy friendship, and it's not long before Maverick wants to be more than friends with Charlie. Unfortunately, her father's relentless emotional abuse has taken it's toll, and Charlie can't, won't, believe that a guy like Maverick could truly want to be with her. Will Maverick be able to get Charlie past her insecurities in order to take a chance on what could be an amazing love story, or will her defenses remain too strong for him to break through?
***
I really enjoyed reading Love Notes. It's always refreshing to have the main character not be a flawless twig, and it's even better when the male appreciates her and loves her for who she is. It's difficult for authors to write insecurities without making their character borderline annoying, but Ms. Gunter did a great job with Charlie's self-conciousness. Maverick was so understanding and patient with Charlie, which is exactly what she needs in a relationship. Maverick is definitely at the top of the YA book boyfriend list.

Tori is at the top of my list for book best friends. Every girl could use a friend like her, and she was a special addition to the story, a necessary one. Without her, Charlie may not have lasted until graduation.

This is not just a light hearted read. Charlies suffers a lot of emotional abuse from her father, and has been practically abandoned by her mother. She's been torn down for eight-teen years, and her self-esteem is as low as you can get. I wanted to jump into the book and just give her a big hug, tell her that she's beautiful, and take her out of that hateful home. Tori and Maverick do an amazing job to help Charlie realize her worth, but it's going to be a long road ahead of them.

I would definitely recommend this YA love story to anyone. Heather Hunter's debut novel definitely puts her on the map as a recommended YA author. The ending is somewhat open ended, paving the way for the second book in the series, but it does not end with a cliffhanger. My Kindle copy included a sneak peak at the second book, so you get a hint of where Maverick and Charlie are at in their relationship. Book 2, Heart Strings, is set to come out Winter 2013, and I can't wait.

Release Date: May 29th, 2013

Blurb
Five years ago Dylan Gomez had it all. He was an up-and-coming boxer with a loving girlfriend, and his sights were set on the big league. Then he let the hype of the fans inflate his ego—he thought he was invincible. That all changed when an alcohol-fueled decision altered the course of his life. He lost his girlfriend and then bit-by-bit his life crumbled around him.

Physical therapist, Regan Holloway, has coasted through life for the last five years. She’s been in the same place all that time and most of her things are still in boxes. Agreeing to a “friendly” date with a co-worker, she ends up ringside and face-to-face with the man she’d fled to forget—Dylan.

Dylan’s turning his life around and working his way back up the ranks; he’s got a big fight lined up in thirty days that will be his ticket back into the pros—if he can win. The only thing holding him back is an old shoulder injury and Regan not being by his side.

When Max, Dylan’s manager, convinces Regan to come with them and work on his shoulder for the fight, she knows she needs to keep things professional so that she won’t be hurt again.

In the thirty-day countdown to the big fight, secrets are revealed, their passion is reignited, and the past threatens to haunt their future. On fight day, Dylan and Regan are truly against the ropes.

Excerpt
Feeling a little lightheaded from the wine, she opened the bathroom door and looked around for a moment to get her bearings. Out of the corner of her eye she saw a red duffle bag, and a shiver traveled down her spine as goose bumps crawled across her skin. Slowly, she turned.

Dylan strode toward her, his big body gliding through the crowd. At his side was his trainer, Max, carrying the red bag. She looked Dylan up and down. He wore loose, black sweatpants and a black t-shirt that hugged the ridges of his chest. Sweat glistened on his face and wet tendrils of black hair were plastered to his neck. His dark eyes were focused straight ahead.

Was he fighting tonight?

Oh, no. Why hadn't she looked at the fight card?

Because she never thought in a million years that he would fight in a casino located in Indio, California. His fights had always been held in larger cities, like Los Angeles or Las Vegas. Never had he fought in a place like the small Dreaming Casino in the middle of the desert.

He hadn't seen her yet, and she tried to head back into the bathroom, but it seemed her feet wouldn't move. She felt panic well within her as he approached, now about fifteen feet away. His gaze fell on her, and she detected a hitch in his smooth gait. Their eyes locked as he approached, and she felt as though she were about to be swallowed up by the massive man coming toward her.

"So tonight you give it your best, Dylan," Max said as they passed, his eyes on the ground, as usual. The man lived in his head, always planning to stay one step in front of Dylan's opponents. "You just need to remember his right hook."

Dylan's gaze held hers, and she felt a long-forgotten sexual heat rip through her. As he passed, she caught the faint scent of sweat mixed with sandalwood, and she cringed when she recognized the scent of the soap he used. When Dylan had finally moved by her so that he couldn't look at her any longer, she closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose, wondering how she was going to get through the night. The man who had shattered her heart would be in fighting in the ring.

Blog Tour Stop: Envisioned by Nikki Narvaez

Blurb
Brielle De Luca thought she was just an average girl, despite her nightly dreams of an impending apocalypse, along with a gorgeous man that pulls at her soul.

However, on the night of her 18th birthday, everything changes when she is thrown into the Elemental World, a world where she is supposedly the One that is spoken about in an ancient Prophecy; a Prophecy that states she is the key to preventing an apocalypse.

Now she must learn to control her power over the four elements, all while dealing with the love and intense passion of her bond to the man from her dreams, Jace Vasquez.

Piece of cake, right?

Excerpt
The fires surrounding me were blazing – I felt as though my skin was melting from the heat of the flames. The towering buildings in this foreign city were reduced to a pile of steaming cinder and rubble. I stood there immobilized by the destruction around me, powerless to stop it. Horrific winged beasts circled around me in the black sky, like vultures searching for their next meal. In the distance, I could see giants as tall as mountains roaming the city, leaving more destruction in their wake. Somehow, all of that wasn't as unsettling as when I saw him - those startling eyes, glowing like embers, burning into me with a look of desperation that I still could not comprehend. Why did he stare at me like I was his salvation? Why did he elicit feelings of longing in me like no other? Talons gripped at his shoulders, causing him to thrash and reach in my direction. They dragged him away into the blackness of the night, and his screams penetrated me to my soul.

I woke up to the sounds of my own screaming, my unruly hair plastered to my skull by sweat, and my body racking in sobs at my lack of control. It felt like a memory given the vast number of times I had dreamt this exact scenario; I had been dreaming it for as long as I could remember. What did these dreams mean? Even though they were impossible, their constant recurrence had to signify something. Who was this man, and why did he arouse feelings in me that no other guy had come close to, even though we hadn't even met? I didn't even know if he existed, yet something deep down in my being screamed that he did. A part of me chastised myself for thinking something so ridiculous – it was just a dream; he wasn't real. Even still, another part hoped that he was real, and that one day, I would be able to give him what he so desperately pleaded for.

My Thoughts
I'm not going to go into much detail of the book, but I think this is a book to go into without knowing much. The twists & turns are so fun and intriguing as Brielle uncovers the truth about herself, her lineage, and her future.

Brielle is a seemingly normal girl who's been sheltered by her father her whole life. One strange thing, though, is that she's had dreams/nightmares of a hauntingly beautiful man for as long as she can remember. In these dreams she always fails to save him, and they've been plaguing her mind for ages.

Having never left her home island Avalon, she dares to do just that on her 18th birthday with her best friend, Kimber. Little does she know that stepping foot off of the island will change her life forever.

To be perfectly honest, I haven't read a good paranormal book in quite some time. Envisioned was just the story I need to reignite my love for this genre. PNR books, in my experience, are predominately about vampires, witches, werewolves, and fairies. Nikki Narvaez bring an interesting element into the paranormal world, The Elementals. These supernatural beings each possess one power of either the Air, Water, Fire, or Earth. This was such an interesting concept to me, and the fights scenes were scripted and choreographed amazingly. I had to hold my breath through several of the scenes as I could envision them played out in my head.

The romance between Jace and Brielle is written very well. I normally have a huge issues with insta-love, but in this case, that's the point of their bond. When you know, you know. There's also quite a bit of steam in this book, and it's scorching! Their chemistry is intense, sexy, and they smolder every time they touch. You don't have to be a PNR fan to love this book. Any romance reader can enjoy the story of Brielle & Jace.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book. Both MCs were strong characters who'd do whatever they have to in order to save their loved ones, no questions asked. The side characters brought a lot of fun to the book to add some laughter when the times were getting tough. The paranormal aspects are refreshing and intriguing. I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2!

Review
After a terrible tragedy befalls Gabrielle Willis, breaking her heart, she moves to New York City with her best friend, Fran, to start a new career and a new life. Because of what happens, she erects a huge wall around her heart, vowing to never let anyone get close again. She rarely dates, and when she does, it's just for fun, not for emotions. Unexpectedly, she runs into the green-eyed god that is Dane Rhodes. They quickly fall into lust, but Gabby's still not sure it will ever get past the physical.

One the sidelines is Brad, the sweet sexy coffee shop owner with whom Gabby's had a few clumsy, albeit sweet, encounters. Giving up Starbucks in order to hang out at Brad's, they quickly fall into an easy friendship. The more time they spend together, the closer they become, and the less Gabby really cares to see Dane. It's apparent to everyone except for Gabby that Brad wants to be more than friends, but he doesn't push her for anything, as he respects her wishes, hoping in time she'll realize how she really feels. At the same time, Gabby's trying hard to fight her growing feelings for Brad, while trying to figure out her intense physical chemistry with Dane.

Will Brad be able to break through the wall around Gabby's heart, or will she stick with Dane in order to minimize the risk of another broken heart?
***
Love Love was a sweet, funny, heartwarming book that does just enough to make you feel that twinge of angst, but it also brings a huge smile to your face throughout most of the book. Beth Michele had me rooting for the good guy as opposed to the sexy badass.

Gabby was such a fun character. She's a goofy, clumsy girl, and she owns it. She's gone through so much at such a young age, that it's amazing that she still has a positive outlook on life, even if she no longer believes in love. Her reasons for her emotional withdrawals were sympathetic, and I think anyone in her situation would have felt the same. She drove me nuts, at times, but she was strong when it was needed the most. I admired her strength as I connected with her on a very emotional level. This could be one of my bffs! Speaking of, LOVED Fran. She was an awesome secondary character, and exactly the type of friend Gabby needed. She told her like it was, but she also is the shoulder to cry on. Their friendship really was a beautiful thing.

Brad.... I LOVE Brad! He's sweet, sexy, charming, and funny. He's the boy-next-door best friend turned boyfriend perfect kinda character.

"I've been wondering something all night." My eyes go wide. "Have you ever been kissed by a superhero before?"

That's Brad.. A sinfully sexy, silly dork. And I love him.

Dane's a wildcard. I wish we would've had a more solid resolution with Dane. I don't know why, but I feel like there could be more to his story than what we got. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, because while I LOVE Brad, I like to think that Dane's a good guy.

All in all, I really enjoyed this story. Don't get me wrong, I love my bad boys, but it's always refreshing to meet a sweet, funny, charming male character whose intellect and personality are equally as sexy as his physical appearance. Love Love definitely delivers on this, and I loved it.

Review
Girl with Guitar should come with a warning label: highly addictive. Ladies, you can keep your rock stars! This girl's stickin' with her country boy!!

Have you ever read a story that was so beautiful and so captivating that you couldn't put it down? Have you ever met characters whom fascinate you in such a way that you never want to say goodbye? That are so realistic that you find yourself wishing they really existed so you could know them? Have you ever finished a book with a feeling that is so bittersweet because you loved it, but you're bummed that it's over? A book that upon finishing, you want to immediately start back over at page one? I have. And for me, that book is Girl with Guitar.
***
Kylie Ryans, an aspiring country musician, is 18, alone, and homeless. With no family, save a witchy stepmother, Kylie decides to head to Nashville where she'll pursue her dream in honor of her late father. After a few dead ends, Kylie finds herself in the right place at the right time. She gets a job at a bar that is visited often by music executives and other big country acts. At an Open Mic Night, she astounds the crowd, as well as another singer's manager.

Trace Corbin is a hot country star whose currently drinking his way out of a job. He's on a last ditch effort tour to try and save his career. He can't seem to keep opening acts, so when his manager sees Kylie, he offers her the chance of a lifetime- to finish the tour opening for bestselling artist, Trace Corbin.

Kylie and Trace are moving in opposite directions, yet something continues to draw them together. The more time spent together, the more Kylie gets to know the Trace that he's been hiding from the world, and from himself. As she gets to know the real Trace Corbin, she finds herself falling hard and falling fast, but unless he changes his path, she knows he'll bring her down with him. Kylie cares for him, but is it enough to risk her career and missing out on her dreams?
***
Kylie Ryans is my favorite kind of female character. She stands strong as she makes the transition from girl to woman. No matter what, she sticks to her guns. Kylie's not afraid to speak her mind, and that's such a refreshing trait in a female character. She gives as good as she gets, and she won't apologize if she offends you, because that's who she is, you better get used to it. Don't get me wrong, she's as sweet as she is sassy, and a girl I'd be best friends with in real life.

You probably have about fifteen more minutes until some guy with deeper dimples and tighter jeans, if that's possible, comes along and steals your thunder.

Trace Corbin is the epitome of the hot, bad ass, jerk. What Trace doesn't want you to know is that deep down there's a good guy inside, but he desperately tries to keep that part of himself hidden. It's easier to not get attached, to have meaningless flings,  because that way no one gets hurt. Unfortunately for him, Kylie's about to chip away at the wall he's built, and he may be unable to resist.

You should run back to your room as fast as those pretty little legs can carry you. And lock the goddamned door.

Kylie & Trace have a beautiful chemistry that flows so easily in their banter as well as in their writing sessions. And this is only the beginning, y'all. This is just the tip of the Trylie iceberg. We're getting at least two more books in the series, and I, for one, couldn't be happier. I seriously love this book, y'all, and I know you will, too!!

Caisey Quinn is breaking into the NA arena with a fantastic debut novel, and I can't wait to read more of her work.  Girl with Guitar is an enchanting story about two lonely people trying to find themselves as they also try to carve their paths in life. I cried, I laughed, I wanted to chuck my Kindle at Trace's head, and most importantly, I fell in love with two characters who will stay will me for a long time.

Tangled is not your mother’s romance novel. It is an outrageous, passionate, witty narrative about a man who knows a lot about women…just not as much as he thinks he knows. As he tells his story, Drew learns the one thing he never wanted in life, is the only thing he can’t live without.

My mini review from before Release Day:
Drew Evans is deliciously entertaining, impossible to resist, outrageously hilarious, and you simply can't get enough. In fact, I'm feeling a touch of the flu coming on & the only cure is more Drew. Tangled more than earns a brilliant, out-of-this-world hysterical, swoon-worthy five stars. Emma Chase has written a highly recommended story with unforgettable characters that are absolutely beyond comparison, and I cannot wait to get my hands on more of her work.

Drew Evans is:

Say hello to Drew Evans.
Meet Drew Evans & the madness that is his mind. He's perverted, arrogant, laugh-out-loud hysterical, and just a lovesick puppy. It's an amazing combination. When the book first begins, Drew's been disgustingly hiding out in his house for a week, where he's come down with something. Flu, he tells himself. Yeah right. Poor, sorry, sad sap Drew Evans has fallen in love, and she's marrying someone else.

We then flash back to where it all began. We meet pre-love Drew, where his personal motto is to never ride the same ride twice. Ever.
Drew Evans may do a lot of women, I mean things, but there's one thing he refuses to do: love. I take that back. Drew loves himself. But love, love? No way. A successful banker with a loving family and a great set of friends, Drew has it all... at least that's what the thought. Enter Kate Brooks, the sweet, sexy, and sassy new associate who turns Drew's world upside down and his heart inside out. He doesn't know why, he doesn't know how, but he knows one thing- he wants Kate Brooks more than he's ever wanted anything in the world, and he'll stop at nothing to get her.

Where do I even begin? Tangled was, by far, one of the best books I've read in 2013 EVER. This is one of those books that is so amazingly good, that you can't even review it. I just want to shout from the rooftops, READ THIS BOOK NOW, WORLD! Drew Evans is a character that will not be forgotten-ever. He's a cocky bastard who you simply can't help but fall for. He's sexy, charming, and funny as hell. He tells it like it is, no hold bar. Emma Chase does an amazing job taking us into the mind of Drew Evans as he determines to make Kate his. I don't believe I've ever read a better perspective from the male POV.

Kate was an equally charming character, fierce and feisty, while keeping Drew on his toes. She's the female character you look for in every book. Strong, confident, and ambitious, she definitely enjoys giving Drew a run for his money. I want to be her when I grow up.

If we’re going to work together, Drew, I think we’re should get a few things straight. I’m not your sweetheart. My name is Kate — Katherine. Use it. And I’m not a kiss-ass. I don’t have to be. My work speaks for itself.

I loved their early love/hate relationship, and their playful banter had a smile on my face. Their chemistry practically radiates off of them with every encounter; you have no idea when the combustion is going to occur. Because it's going to...it's only a matter of time.

It makes me want to kiss her and strangle her at the same time. I’ve never been into S&M. But I’m beginning to see its benefits.

So question... why are you still reading this review? You should be off meeting Drew, finding out about the mysterious "flu" of his. My only complaint.... it ended. Seriously. Ms. Chase, I need/want/crave/desire more!! I'm going to GoodReads stalk you until I see more of your work added. Consider yourself Fangirled!!
