Kellen Handler is in deep.

Ever since he can remember, he’s wanted to be a professional surfer. And he made it, rising to the top of the ranks, traveling the world and riding every break he’s ever dreamed of. His good looks and reputation for living on the edge—both in and out of the water—have made him an international superstar. But when his best friend dies in a tragic accident, Kellen wipes out big time, spiraling so badly that everything he’s worked for starts to disintegrate.

Tour officials scramble to do damage control and demand he work with a public relations company to clean up his bad boy image. It doesn't help that the person assigned to him, Gina Bellori, has her own demons associated with the surfing world.

Against her better judgement Gina accepts the job and concentrates on repairing Kellen's tattered reputation, despite his protests and despite the pain it causes her. With her past colliding with her present—and Kellen in the thick of it—she begins to realize that some secrets can't stay hidden.

And suddenly, Kellen Handler is no longer worried about losing his career.

He's more worried about losing his heart.

MaverickMaverick by Anna Cruise
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you've been following my reviews, then it's no secret to you that I love a good Anna Cruise book. Maverick definitely delivers. In fact, dare I say it, it may just be my favorite of her books. There's a shortage of bad boy surfers in the literature arena, so Kellen is a refreshing addition to the book boyfriend shelf.

description

When we first meet Kellen, he's waking up from a drunk night of debauchery with another conquest, whom in his mind can only remember as "Ch."

Chelsea? Cheryl? What was her name? Something with a Ch.

Now before you go thinking, "that dog!" you need to know that Kellen makes no promises, he's not a womanizer. He's up front with the fact that he doesn't do relationships, so if the women still go with him, well, that's on them.

He leaves Ch to head to his surfing competition, barely making it on time, and still smelling of booze. He goes out and surfs well, but then blows off interviews and a chance at a new sponsorship, much to the chagrin of the surfing tour's leadership. You see, a recent tragedy took the life of Kellen's best friend, and his life has been in a downward spiral ever since. Because of that, the surfing tour has hired a professional to help clean up Kellen's image. Kellen, of course being the hot-headed male, refuses the help, claiming that he doesn't need it.

description

Unfortunately for Kellen, an unexpected situation later that night causes him to end up in a drunken brawl, so the tour draws the line in the sand. Accept the PR help, or you're out of the tour.

Enter Gina Bellori, the young, attractive professional who's going to be Kellen's one stop shop to a better reputation. Gina has a hidden past that leads to her aversion to surfing, so she wants to be there about as much as Kellen wants her. Ever the professional, Gina sets about changing Kellen's image, which leads to them spending a lot of time together. It doesn't take long for them to be drawn to each other, effectively blurring the lines between professional and personal.

I didn't want to fuck Gina. I mean, I did, but not right then. What I wanted was her. Not her body and not what she could do to me or give me. I wanted her.

Kellen wants to know Gina, all of her, but will her past issues with love, loss, and surfing keep her from letting him in, or is Kellen just the man she needs to finally be able to let go and move on?

*****
I LOVED this book. It had all the elements that I like in a good love story. It was equal parts funny, sad, and heartwarming. Both Gina and Kellen are fucked up. They both have baggage. And they are both exactly what the other needs to heal the pain that's been set so deep within their hearts.

Gina frustrated the crap out of me, but it was understandable once you learned the truth about her past. It wanted to smack her and tell her to run, not walk, into Kellen's arms. I knew her resistance was futile, and I kept wanting her to finally realize how perfect they were for each other.

description

And another plus to this book is the steam! Anna Cruise wrote some of her steamiest scenes in this one, and I loved it! The sexual tension radiates off the pages as Gina tries to resist all that is Kellen Handler.

To be honest, I really have no complaints about this book. The only one I could possibly come up with is that I want MORE. I want more of Kellen & Gina in a relationship. I could read another full book about them just to see them interacting as a true couple. And when my only complaint is that I want more, I think that means it was pretty. damn. good.

description

Last but certainly not least, there's one notable character that puts the cherry on top, the icing on the cake, the ice in my vodka. Let me introduce you to...

description

Yes, our bad boy, sexy surfer is the proud owner of an adorable black cat. I've never loved an animal more in a book than I loved Rip. He was a perfect addition to showcase Kellen's softer side. Seriously, not only do we get a hot surfer, we get a hot one who owns and love an adorable cat. Does it get any better??

“Jesus Christ,” I said. “You're trying to choke me.”

“Stop being a baby,” Gina said. “And hold still.”

I wasn't being a baby but it was the only thing I could think of to say. Because she was standing an inch away from me, her arms around my neck, her breath blowing on my face, and the only thing I wanted to do was crush her to me.

She'd knocked on my door right at five, armed with a shirt and tie for me, wearing a dress that, the minute I saw it, I wanted to rip from her body. I'd stood there, my mouth open but if she noticed, she didn't say anything. Instead, she breezed past me, thrusting the shirt and tie in my arms as she walked by.

“Go change,” she'd said.

And I did.

She was now trying to use the tie as a noose around my neck. But I was having a hard time thinking about how uncomfortable it was. Mostly because I was trying to concentrate on keeping my dick from standing at attention while she was right there.

Blog Tour Stop and Giveaway: If I Fall by Anna Cruise

If I Fall by Anna Cruise on Goodreads

Meg Calloway is at the edge.

Reeling from her parents' sudden divorce, fifteen-year old Meg has never felt more alone. Her father is about to marry a woman she can't stand and her mother's only companion is an endless supply of alcohol. When Aidan Westwood, an older boy at school, shows interest in her, she grabs on and doesn't let go, thinking he's exactly what she needs to help stem her loneliness and despair. She quickly learns that Aidan lives a darker, more dangerous life than she does and the more isolated she feels from her family, the more willing she is to step into Aidan's world.

As Meg drifts further from her friends, she tries to find comfort with a boy who is opening her eyes up to new things, none of them good. Will she listen to those around her who are warning her that she's headed down a path of self-destruction?

Or will she fall too far...too fast...too deep?

Review
I'd highly recommend that all teenage girls read this gritty portrayal of the dark sides of growing up. This is not a traditional YA love story. Look, we all love our fictional bad boys, but it's important that there are also stories out there that can show a bad boy for what he can be... a true loser. This isn't a story filled with romantic walks on the beach, while reforming the bad boy to be good enough for the good girl. This story is a dark, disturbing tale that moves in the opposite direction. Ms. Cruise describes just how easily the good girl can be brought down, and how difficult it is to rise against.

I'd fallen. Fallen hard. But not so far that I couldn't pick myself up.

Fifteen year old Meg Calloway's life has just been turned upside down. Her father's left the family for a younger woman. Her mother, in turn, has found solace only at the bottom of a bottle, falling into a depression so consuming that she can barely leave the house, let alone be any sort of mother to Meg.

After a night out with friends, Meg's not ready to return to the desolate place she once called home.

My thoughts drifted to what I knew waited for me at home. I thrived to think of something else but I couldn't. The memories sucked me back in. I couldn't go back there, to that suffocating place that reeked of misery, that threatened to swallowed me whole.

Instead, she strolls down the beach until she comes across a group of seniors from her high school. Amongst them is Aidan, a charming, attractive, charismatic older boy who's instantly taken by Meg. Aidan quickly becomes an easy escape from Meg's less than desirable home life. Unfortunately, sweet, charming Aidan is the very definition of a wolf in sheep's clothing. As he leads Meg down a dark rabbit hole of drugs, alcohol, and sex, she begins to lose not only her friends, but herself.

You're never smiling. It would be one thing if you looked happy when you are with him. But every time I see you? You don't look very happy.

Despite her friends warnings and concern, Meg can't help being pulled further into Aidan's world of lies and deceit. Those close to her no longer recognize her as they attempt to make her see Aidan for who he really is, but she's resistant to their efforts.

I think I just wanted some attention. I was tired of being alone and feeling hurt all the time. And, with him, I didn't hurt anymore.

How far will she have to fall before it's late, and who, if anyone, will be there to catch her?

If I Fall was a very compelling story that showcases the effects that divorce can have on young teenagers, and highlights the dark path of peer pressure that they can easily fall into by means of escape. Ms. Cruise wrote a chilling portrayal on how easily young, impressionable teen girls can fall in with the wrong crowd when it seems as if everyone else in your life has give up on you. At the same time, it's also a story about strength, and overcoming the loss and loneliness that life can bestow upon us. It's a story about not giving up on those close to you, no matter how damaged they may become. This is a story about falling...and finding a way to stand back up.

Excerpt

“All I'm saying is I think you deserve better,” Case said. “From my point of view, anyway. You deserve better.”
I threw my head back on the sofa and laughed. It was a harsh laugh with no mirth. “Most of the time, I don't think I deserve better.”
“Everyone deserves better.”
“Not me.” I didn't look at him. “No one else would want me. I've royally fucked up. Everything. There isn't anything better out there. Anything or anyone.”
“Yeah, there is.”
“Oh, really?” I brought my eyes back to him. “And where exactly would I find better?”
It was quiet for a moment. Then he said,“Well, you might start with me.”
My eyes widened. “With you?”
His cheeks flushed just a bit. “You don't have to sound so surprised.”
I immediately felt bad. “That's not what I meant. Sorry.”
He laughed. “It's fine. I'm kidding. About you being surprised. Not about being better.”
“Well how would I know you were better?” I said. “It's not like you've ever asked me out.”
He thought about this for a minute. “So if I asked you out, you'd go?”
I honestly had no idea where the conversation was headed. He was confusing me like crazy and I wasn't sure what to say to him. I thought maybe he was just screwing around with me.
“Yeah, I would,” I said, calling his bluff.
“What about Aidan?” he asked.
“What about him?” I said, shrugging. “You just pointed out all the reasons I shouldn't be with him. Maybe you're right and I've just been too dumb to see it.”
I didn't know if I believed what I was saying but it felt like the truth was on the wall, some message that everyone had deciphered but me. And I was going to try my hardest to translate it, however I could.
He stared at me for a long time. I didn't say anything, just stared into those eyes that were always friendly, always honest.

Aanna's Favorite Soundtracks
Can you share your playlist of favorite songs from movie soundtracks with us?

I’m not much of a movie buff, but these songs managed to stay with me after I saw the movies.

Danger Zone - Kenny Loggins from Top Gun.
Has there ever been a more recognizable, awesome song? Just from those first couple of notes, I’m totally fired up and ready to climb into the cockpit of an F-16 and go to Top Gun School! And make out with Maverick.

You’re The Best Around - Joe Esposito from Karate Kid.
I’ve always believed that Daniel beat all of the Cobra Kais because of this song. Like, he heard the song in the arena and just got himself ready to kick some Billy Zabka butt.

If You Leave - OMD from Pretty in Pink.
I loved OMD even before they wrote this awesome song, but I loved them even more after it showed up in this movie.

Blaze of Glory - Bon Jovi from Young Guns II.
Young Guns and Young Guns II were movies that you didn’t realize were really good until years later. Modern Westerns for teenage girls. And this Bon Jovi girl was the perfect anthem.

I Want You To Want Me - Letters to Cleo from 10 Things I Hate About You.
One of my all-time favorite movies - if you haven’t seen it, go get it RIGHT NOW - and this is such a great version of the Cheap Trick classic.

Let’s Go Crazy - Prince from Purple Rain.
I watched Purple Rain with my parents. Yeah, that was a bit awkward. Regardless, that experience didn’t ruin this fantastic song for me.

Hazy Shade of Winter - The Bangles from Less Than Zero.
This is a very un-Bangles sounding song from one of those movies that epitomizes the 80s. Robert Downey Jr. was essentially playing himself in the movie based on Bret Easton Ellis’ book and the entire soundtrack was awesome.

Pretty in Pink - Psychedelic Furs from Pretty in Pink.
Yeah, I know. I already mentioned Pretty in Pink. I actually thought about just listing every song on the soundtrack -- it was that good. But the actual theme song to the movie was nearly as good as the OMD song.

When She Loved Me - Sarah McLachlin from Toy Story 2.
And this is why I always pause before giving away any of my kids’ stuffed animals. Stop making me cry, sad song!

I See The Light - Mandy Moore from Tangled.
Mr. Cruise might’ve put this on one of the many mix CDs he’s made for me.

Now I need some popcorn and an Icee...and chocolate. I can’t watch movies without chocolate.

Book Playlist
Can you share your playlist you listened to while writing ‘If I Fall’?

I don’t listen to a ton of music when I write, mostly because I find it distracting. I mean, the radio is always on in the background, but I’m the kind of person who will start singing along the minute a song comes on that I like. And, um, that isn’t conducive to getting a lot of writing done.

But there were a lot of songs I thought about, a lot of songs I listened to when I was wrapped up in the plot and the characters. These are the ones that immediately come to mind.

Nobody's Home – Avril Lavigne

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGFSNE18Ywc

This song pretty much sums up Meg's life. She wants to go home—but nobody's there. Nobody she can connect with, anyway, and certainly no one who can help her navigate everything that's going on in her life.

Le Pony – Italian Japanese

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6J85cC8XFM

This is an obscure, brilliant band from Southern California. Listen beyond the instrumental opening and you'll hear a sweetly haunting song about saying “your last goodbye”—just like Meg did when her father drives away in the opening scene.

Free Falling – Tom Petty

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lWJXDG2i0A

One of my most favorite songs in the Universe. The first four words of the song pretty much sum up Meg: “She's a good girl...” and these words, “And I'm a bad boy 'cuz I don't even miss her...” have Aidan written all over them.

Wanted -- Hunter Hayes

I can totally see Case singing this song to Meg. He wants to make her feel loved, make her feel wanted, even when she doesn’t think she deserves him.

Just The Way You Are – Bruno Mars

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjhCEhWiKXk

I'm not a big Bruno Mars fan, but this song—for me, anyway—speaks exactly to how Case feels about Meg. He's not trying to change her, he's not trying to make her into someone she's not and he's not trying to make her feel bad about who she's become. He doesn't care about any of that. He likes her for who she is, flaws and all. Just the way she is.

Cast
If ‘Tainted Waters’ was made into a movie and you could cast anyone you wanted, who would you choose? (Please attach any pictures separately)

I would love it Tainted Waters was made into a movie. I have some ideas of who all the cast would be but I’ll limit myself to sharing who I think would play an excellent Sam and who would play an excellent Keegan.

Ann Hathaway would play an excellent Samantha Overtone. Sam is  feisty, a bit self centered, has a bit of an attitude
.

Jake Gyllenhall could easily play Keegan Wesley. Keegan is a bit more laid back, hunky.

Out from under the shadow of her twin, Abby's life—and her relationship with West—blossoms. When Abby leaves town one weekend, something unthinkable happens and her relationship with West is shattered. Reeling from the discovery, Abby fears all of her plans have backfired and she's created a mess for both of them, a mess that no one can clean up.

But West isn't willing to let her go that easily. When he forces her to confront secrets they've both been hiding, Abby must decide more than if she's willing to forgive and forget. She must also decide just what kind of life she wants...and who she wants to live it with.

Review
If you know anything about me, and at this point, I'm hoping that you do, you know that I love a good Anna Cruise book. I've reviewed, and loved, all of her other books. It Was Me was the very first book of hers that I read and it hooked me. She has a way of writing that draws you into the world she's created and you truly feel like you're witnessing everything play out right in front of you.

I absolutely loved Abby and completely connected with her from the very first chapter. She's a complex character as while she's a strong girl, she's also vulnerable due to her twin sister, Annika's constant torture of her. After a final straw, Abby decides to change her college plans because she simply can no longer handle being in Annika's shadow or being her proverbial punching bag. I completely felt her need to get away, and also commended it. I was cheering for her when she decided to throw up her middle finger and enroll in the local community college and  convince her parents to let her move into her own apartment. And thank goodness she did, because on the first day of registration she met a sexy, swoon-worthy, smooth-talking West Montgomery. Right off the bat, he irritates her and flirts with her at the same time, and she can't help but take in his gorgeous looks and hard body.

After he barters for her phone number while changing her flat tire, West and Abby fall into a quick, comfortable relationship. West is exactly what she needs to separate herself from her parents, from Annika, and from everything she's trying to get away from. At the same time, Abby helps West stay grounded, keeping his temper at bay. As their relationship progresses, it's clear that they're chemistry is scorching and they're both falling hard and fast, but it can't always be sunshine and rainbows, right? She decides to keep her family a secret from West, who has secrets of his own, which leads to a pretty huge conflict that almost killed me.

All in all, I really enjoyed It Was Me. I think things progressed a little too quickly for my taste, but come on, it's West Montgomery. It probably take long for me to fall for the guy either. I can't wait to get my hands on It Was Me to see what's in story for West and Abby, and unfortunately, Annika.

In the kitchen with West Montgomery

If you haven't read It Was You, I'll let you in on a little secret. West Montgomery is a super-hot baseball player/surfer. But he also loves to bake.

No joke.

On one of his dates with Abby, he brings a basket down to the beach. Inside is a container of homemade chocolate chip cookies. Not just chocolate chip cookies. The best freaking chocolate chip cookies Abby has ever had.

So, I thought...hmm. Why don't I share West Montgomery's Top Ten recipes?

Here they are, in no particular order. Because all of them are fantastic. The recipes are all available on West's Pinterest page. Because he is soooo not too cool to mock Pinterest. He knows that's where you find all the good shit.

West's Favorite Recipes
1. Nutella-Filled Chocolate, Chocolate Chip Cookies – because, honestly, who doesn't like Nutella?
2. Pumpkin Bars with Cream Cheese Frosting – he makes a double batch of frosting and slathers the whole pan. And Abby. :)
3. Chocolate Chip Scones – his go-to recipe for breakfast in bed with Abby.
4. Best Cheesecake Ever – sinfully rich and smooth.
5. Flourless Chocolate Cake – yeah, Abby was super impressed when he whipped this one up.
6. Oreo Balls – Three ingredients. Three.
7. Slutty Brownies – If he ever baked something for Annika – which he wouldn't – I'm pretty sure this would be first choice.
8. Chocolate Fondue – let's just say this gets used in multiple ways...
9. Best Brownies Ever – West makes these for Abby in It Was Me, their sequel. And they don't get eaten. But not for the reason you might think...
10. West's Chocolate Chip Cookies – Uh-huh. This is it. The recipe that won Abby over.

Hope you find some baking inspiration. Hey, maybe you can share these with your man and see what he can whip up for you in the kitchen...

It Was Me Blurb- (sequel to It Was You)

All West Montgomery wanted was a vacation. A week-long stay in Tucson with Abby and her parents, a chance to get away for the week, the opportunity to get to know her family a little better and maybe carve out a little alone time with his girlfriend.

What he doesn't count on is finding a way to resume his baseball career.

Encouraged by Abby and her father to attend a MLB open tryout, West discovers that he can still play ball—well—and he suddenly becomes the hottest commodity on the field. Overwhelmed with offers and possibilities, West knows that whatever choice he makes will affect more than his baseball career. It will affect his future with Abby.

Professional baseball was always his dream, but Abby was a new dream come true. He doesn't want to choose between them, but in order to fulfill one of those dreams, West will have to.

Because he knows it's all on him.
